Housefull 4: Akshay Kumar film drops on Diwali, but hits milestone

A superstar, a popular franchise, multiple stars and most importantly, a Diwali release, there were multiple factors that went in favour of Housefull 4. However, the makers would’ve definitely expected the reincarnation comedy to have done better than the numbers it put up in the opening weekend. The Akshay Kumar-starrer hit the Rs 50-crore at the box office, but that was after experiencing a drop on Sunday, seemingly because of the Diwali festivities. The movie, however, is expected to show growth from Monday.

Housefull 4 had already opened lower than Akshay Kumar’s other releases of this year like Kesari and Mission Mangal, which had earned around Rs 20 crore and Rs 27 crore respectively. The multistarrer, after opening day figures of around Rs 19 crore, was stable on day 2, earning around Rs 18 crore on Saturday. Ideally, Sunday is the day when most films show a staggering growth, but that was not the case with Housefull 4. The collections, as per reports, saw a drop to Rs 14.25 crore on Sunday. The reason for the drop is being attributed to Diwali, since most people perform the Lakshmi Puja at home and visit relatives and celebrate instead of going to a theatre. The ‘pre-Diwali’ period for Housefull 4 has been termed as ‘good’ in trade reports. The figure helped the movie reach its first milestone, the Rs 50-crore mark. The total now stands at Rs 50.75 crore. The makers, however, claimed the figure as Rs 53.22 crore. 

Hopes still alive 

All eyes are now on Monday, as the movie is expected to witness a big turnaround, since it a public holiday and most of the festivities are over. Tuesday will also be crucial as it is a holiday at some places. It is not clear yet if the majorly negative word-of-mouth has played a part in the collections till now. The future of the movie would be clearer only after the next two days.

Housefull 4 also stars Riteish Deshmukh, Bobby Deol, Kriti Kharbanda, Kriti Sanon, Pooja Hedge in lead roles and Chunky Panday, Rana Daggubati, Jonny Lever, Sharad Kelkar, Ranjeet, among others. The film has been directed by Farhad Samji. It has been backed by Sajid Nadiadwala and Fox Star Studios.
