'Kesari': Why was Akshay Kumar-starrer historical film titled so?
Akshay Kumar and Parineeti Chopra-starring Kesari released on March 21, 2019; the film was a huge success and here's why it was called so. Read on to know
Akshay Kumar-starrer Kesari released on March 21, 2019. The film was a huge commercial as well as a critical hit. The film is considered as one of the greatest historical filmsby many fans.
How did the film get titled Kesari?
Kesari was based on the battle of Saragarhi that was fought before the Tirah Campaign on September 12 1897. Akshay Kumar played the role of military commander Havildar Ishar Singh. He led the army of 21 Sikh soldiers that fought against thousands of Afghani invaders.
The title of the film, Kesari, apparently symbolises the courage, bravery, and sacrifice that the Sikh soldiers showcased during the fight. Kesari was the colour of the turbans donned by the soldiers as well. A very good example of this is in Akshay Kumar’s dialogue from the film, “Aaj meri pagdi bhi Kesari, jo bahega mera lahoo bhi Kesari aur mera jawab bhi Kesari”.
The Battle of Saragarhi was fought between the British Indian Empire and the Afghan tribesmen. The Sikh soldiers that fought against Afghani invaders were a part of the British Indian Army. The fight is considered to be one of the greatest last stands in history. Every year, September 12 is celebrated as Sikh Military Commemoration Day.
There have also been rumours that the makers of Kesari have tweaked the original true events of the war to comply with the needs of a film for mainstream entertainment. Few critics were not impressed with Bollywood’s portrayal of the event. Kesari reportedly had a box office collection of approximately Rs. 150 crore. The film also starred Parineeti Chopra, and the film was the first time she was seen opposite Akshay Kumar on the silver screen. Kesari was also director Anurag Singh’s comeback after 10 years. His last film was Dil Bole Hadippa!
