Though Saif Ali Khan’s only National Award win came for a romantic-comedy role in Hum Tum, the fact is that he receives applause mostly for his dark roles, be it Omkara or Ek Hasina Thi is well-known. While these roles were not out-and-out menacing right from the first frame to the last, he seems to be overtly evil in his latest film Laal Kaptaan, which hit the theaters on Friday. One would naturally expect him to shine once again, and as far as the opinions of Twitter users are concerned, he stood true to the expectations. However, that was not the case with the movie, as it was termed unimpressive for most who caught the initial shows.
Minuses
Script was to blame for most.
“Watched #LaalKaptaan & it gave me severe headache. Story , direction performances & every aspect of the film is horrible to say the least. Watch at your own risk,” was what one of the viewers wrote.
A user termed it 'horrendous' and felt it should’ve released on digital platforms instead. The person tweeted, “The trailer created good intrigue with an interesting theme of a Naga Saadhu & the world of 18th century when Britishers ruled India. But it's nowhere meant for the theatre & should have been strictly done for the OTT platform. TOO EXPERIMENTAL!”
Most pointed out the flaws in the script. “If too many coincidences and half starts could kill a movie #LaalKaptaan would be it. A gritty, violent, gorgeously shot movie ruined by its back-breaking runtime and almost skewed religious politics,” was a Twitter’s user’s feedback."
Another shared, “#LaalKaptaan is a slow, painful and a bizarre film. The writing is poor and even the execution isn’t great. The editing is not smooth in this film that has multiple tracks.”
Pluses
However, some people felt Saif Ali Khan was outstanding. Saif Ali Khan’s fan clubs felt he deserved the second National Award of his career, One user thought Saif gave a ‘solid’ performance.
A few were very impressed with the film too and some called 'totally worth it.' "Take a bow #SaifAliKhan . Fully immersing himself in such an eccentric character! An authentic western with gory violence and a world so detailed and unique! The masses may not appreciate it but this is truly worth it!" read one tweet.
Laal Kaptaan is the story of a Sadhu-like assassin who is in the quest to find a person who wronged him and take revenge. The movie has been directed by NH 10 fame Navdeep Singh and stars Deepak Dobriyal, Zoya Hussain and Manav Vij, apart from a cameo from Sonakshi Sinha.
