Laal Kaptaan, Saif Ali Khan's most-anticipated film after a year was making headlines before its release for all the right reasons. However, after it aired, it seemed to have gained mixed reactions from audiences as well as critics, and while the actor is lauded for his performance, there are many who have criticized it for being 'unbearably long', 'over-dramatic' and 'over-written'. And as per reports from Box Office India, the film opened lower than Sonam Kapoor's The Zoya Factor and minted a total of Rs 50 lakhs at the ticketing counters. It also faced strong competition from Angelina Jolie's Maleficent, and for the Khan starrer to pick up, it has to do amazingly well during the weekend, that is for the next two days.
Netizens left disappointed:
Though Saif Ali Khan’s only National Award win came for a romantic-comedy role in Hum Tum, the fact is that he receives applause mostly for his dark roles, be it Omkara or Ek Hasina Thi is well-known. While these roles were not out-and-out menacing right from the first frame to the last, he seems to be overtly evil in his latest film Laal Kaptaan, which hit the theaters on Friday. One would naturally expect him to shine once again, and as far as the opinions of Twitter users are concerned, he stood true to the expectations. However, that was not the case with the movie, as it was termed unimpressive for most who caught the shows.
#LaalKaptan Review: A slow movie which fails to engage the audience. Saif has done a great job and gives the movie life but the story focuses on small details which makes it boring. Music is decent. A lot more was expected from this though. 2⭐#LaalKaptaanreview

They come up with films like #LaalKaptaan and then complain that Hindi film viewers don't visit theaters to watch experimental cinema.
