Bollywood industry has been producing biographical movies for a long time. Biopic movies dramatise the life of a non-fictional or historical person. These movies are a great way to convey to the audiences strong messages and make them aware of true-life stories of important historical characters:
Neerja
The film, starring Sonam Kapoor in the lead role, is a story based on the events that took place when a Pan Am Flight 73 was high jacked in Karachi. The central character was only 23 years old when she saved several lives of the passengers on board. The movie was a commercial success and received high praise from critics.
Maanjhi
This film tells the story of a poor labourer who spent twenty-two years to carve a road through a treacherous mountain. The central character Dashrath Manjhi is played by Nawazuddin Siddiqui, who is popularly known as a mountain man. The film received numerous awards.
Bhaag Milkha Bhaag and movies on sportspersons
Starring Farhaan Akhtar, Bhaag Milkha Bhaag was the first biopic to be made on a sportsperson. The movie is about Milkha Singh who won a Gold medal at the 1958 Olympics for India. Once this movie became a blockbuster, there were many other films like, M.S. Dhoni, Mary Kom, Dangal, Paan Singh Tomar that released on the silver screen, and all of them were commercial successes.

Many movies from the political world have also been made in the Bollywood industry. Some of them have been massive commercial and critical successes. These include Sardaar (1994) based on Vallabhbhai Patel, and Thackeray (2019), based on Balasahab Thackeray, PM Narendra Modi (2019) depicting the life of Narendra Modi, and The Accidental Prime Minister (2019), which is about Manmohan Singh.

The Dirty Picture (2011) was a movie based on the life of a south Indian actor, Silk Smitha and her journey to becoming a popular face in the industry. Sanju, which released in the year 2018, is based on the Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt. In the movie, the real-life events of his life are shown. Both the movies were well received by viewers and critics.

Chhapaak, starring Deepika Padukone, is set to release in 2020. It is based on an acid attack survivor. Sardar Udham Singh, a Vicky Kaushal starrer, is based on a Sikh revolutionary who swore to take revenge on the Jallianwala Bagh Massacre. '83 is a biopic based on the veteran cricketer Kapil Dev.
