Born on October 18, 1950, the late Om Puri is credited as one of the most versatile Bollywood actors of his times. There are many movies which showcase the acting genius portraying iconic roles. The actor passed away on January 6th, 2017 following a massive heart attack at his Mumbai residence leaving by a son from his marriage to his ex-wife Nandita Puri. Let us take a look at some of Om Puri's top iconic scenes during his Bollywood career.
Top 5 Om Puri iconic scenes
1. Ardh Satya (1983): Ardh Satya was undoubtedly the career-defining moment for Om Puri. The scene where Om Puri recites a poem (originally written by Dilip Chitre) from a book that his character wrote in the film is surreal. The movie captured the life of a dutiful cop who finds himself caught amidst the wrongdoers in the bureaucratic system. He jots down his struggles as a helpless policeman who finds himself being used as a pawn by the corrupted powerful people in the system.
2. Tamas (1987): The Pig killing scene which becomes the cause of a riot appears at the start of the movie and sets the tone of the whole film. The movie is based on a novel by Bhishma Sahni of the same name and deals with the partition of India and how it affected the normal lives of people.
3. Arohan (1982):
The plot revolved around Hari Mondal (Om puri's character) who portrayed a poor farmer in the film falling a victim to the cruelty of landlords. He received his first national award in best actor category for Arohan.
4. Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro (1983): Whenever we talk about this satirical movie, we remember the Mahabharata scene where Puri plays an alcoholic builder and is one of the several actors who crash the Draupadi disrobing scene during the play.
5. Aakrosh (1980): This was one of the many movies which saw Om Puri working with the director Govind Nihalani. The funeral scene was one of the chilling scenes from the movie where Bhiku Lahanya (Om Puri) screams shrillingly after killing her sister at their father’s funeral to save her from the lust of village foreman and relieve her from the same agony that his wife went through. He screamed in a revolt against the human rights violation that a lower stratum of the society faces.
