OMG 2 Box Office Prediction: How will the Akshay Kumar starrer fare on day 1?

OMG 2 is all set to make its theatrical debut on August 11. The film will be clashing with Sunny Deol’s Gadar 2 at the box office. After Adipurush’s debacle, OMG 2 has been under scrutiny for its religious aspects and portrayal of Lord Shiva in the movie. Reportedly, the Akshay Kumar starrer will revolve around the issues of sex education and homosexuality, raising concern among fans that it can hurt the sentiments of the religious communities.

Ahead of its release, the film was screened for CBFC, which cleared it with 27 modifications and an Adults-only certificate. So, how will these factors affect OMG 2’s numbers on the opening day? Let's find out.

How will OMG 2 perform at the box office?

When asked about how Akshay Kumar starrer OMG 2 will perform at the box office on its opening day, Trade analyst Sumit Kadel told Republic Media Network that he expects the film to collect around Rs 7-9 crore on its first day. “OMG 2’s collection might get affected by word of mouth but it also has the A certificate. I don’t think it will block the theatres with a huge number. The promo itself wasn’t as good as what we expected from it. The censor board has also skimmed the essence of the film,” said Kadel.

The analyst also explained that Akshay was supposed to play Lord Shiva in the movie, which was changed to a messenger of god by CBFC. Now, it will be hard to believe his character which will inadvertently affect the whole film. He added that it will be difficult for OMG 2 to withstand the full force of the Gadar sequel. “In its lifetime it can maybe reach Rs 70-80 crores. If the word of mouth is good, it might reach Rs 50-60 crores on its opening day weekend,” added Kadel.

Echoing his claim, another trade analyst Ramesh Bala predicted that OMG 2 will open with Rs 7-9 crore. He stated the film being a courtroom drama might not attract a wide sector of audience. Additionally, it is based on a sensitive subject so it might be hard to foretell how the viewers will handle the spiritual or religious angle.

Will the legacy of OMG help its sequel? 

While talking about the legacy of OMG 2, Bala said, “OMG 2 is kind of a niche comedy. It's not like a mass movie per se so, we have to see how it goes or if it’s going to attract an audience who are interested in this film.” 

Kadel, on the other hand, was straightforward about the legacy being a sizeable part of the OMG 2’s collection. He added that without the first part to back onto, this film would only mint Rs 3-4 crores on its first day. Taking Akshay Kumar’s star power into consideration, the analyst said, “Akshay Kumar is in the worst phase of his career, like his last 4-5 films. There is no excitement for the audience to see him on the big screen because he’s coming every 2-3 months. He’s not getting the response he used to get before COVID.”

Kadel explained if the film turns out to be good, with the help of word-of-mouth, it’ll do Rs. 70-80 crore in its lifetime. He added that keeping in mind that OMG 2 is clashing with Gadar 2 at the box office, if it manages to cross the mark of Rs. 80 crore he will consider it a 'hit'.
