Pati Patni Aur Woh: Bhumi Pednekar says 'sorry' for marital rape line

As a controversy was sparked after the trailer Pati Patni Aur Woh featured a joke around marital rape, lead actor Bhumi Pednekar apologised for the statement.

Kartik Aaryan had shot to fame with his lengthy monologue in Pyaar Ka Punchnama. While his rant connected with the youth, the movie succeeded and there was more of it in the sequel, that also became successful, there was a backlash too for the misogynistic outpour and the plot. Another of the actor’s monologue is now drawing the ire of the netizens. In his latest movie, Pati Patni Aur Woh, his 'joke' on marital rape has not gone well with the Twitteratti. Amid reports that the line would be removed from the film, lead actor Bhumi Pednekar has apologised for the statement. The actor, who plays the ‘Patni’ in the movie, said she was sorry if the line had hurt the sentiments of the people, clearing that it wasn’t the intention.

When asked about the controversy surrounding the line heard in the trailer, Bhumi, in an interview with an entertainment portal, apologised to those who were hurt by the statements. The actor added that offending someone was not their intention. The Saand Ki Aankh actor added that no one associated with the team of Pati Patni Aur Woh belonged to ‘that school’ or such a thought process.

The 30-year-old also defended her director Mudassar Aziz, stating that he has always ‘celebrated women’. Bhumi also asserted her own stand in this regard, stating her films were a testimony to her views about her gender. The Dum Laga Ke Haisha star added that she has always worked towards reducing the gender gap and that she wouldn’t be a part of something that would increase it. The actor also shared that she has rejected many films for the same reason, though she was offered a big remuneration and the movies later went on to become a big hit.

Controversy

In the trailer of the movie, Kartik’s character Chintu Tyagi is heard saying, "Biwi se sex maang lein, toh hum bhikaari. Biwi ko sex naa de, toh hum atyaachari. Biwi ko sex mana kar dein, toh hum atyachaari aur kisi tarah jugaad laga ke uss se sex haasil kar lein na toh balaatkaari bhi hum hain." (We are beggars if we ask for sex from our wives, we are oppressors if we deny them sex, and somehow if we manage to have sex with her, then we are rapists too).

Pati Patni Aur Woh also stars Ananya Panday in the role of Woh (the other woman). The movie is a remake of the 1978 film of the same name. The comedy releases on December 6.
