Sanjay Dutt, or "Sanju Baba" as people lovingly call him, has come a long way in Bollywood since his debut. Yet, there is very little knowledge about his life as a child. In the biography, Sanjay Dutt: The Crazy Untold Story of Bollywood’s Bad Boy, the author has stated many things about Sanju Baba’s childhood. Here is what his life was like before becoming a Bollywood star.
Sanjay Dutt's childhood
Sanjay Dutt was born to Sunil Dutt and Nargis on July 29, 1959. As a child, Sanjay was fascinated by the work his father did. As Sunil Dutt used to work a lot, Sanjay’s mother took care of him most of the time. He reportedly spent a lot of time at his maternal grandmother’s house, where he was treated to great luxury and comfort, a local media reported. While growing up, he was pampered and stubborn and Nargis used to give him severe punishments to control him, but Sanjay’s witty nature and love would break Nargis down and she would eventually give into Sanjus’s demands.
As pampered as he was growing up, Sanjay Dutt always had a big heart. He did not hesitate to give gifts to his friends and people in need. For instance, in an interview, it was said that his family went to a function in Delhi in winter, where he saw a beggar who was feeling cold, so Sanju gave his jacket to the beggar to keep him warm. It has been reported in tabloids that he also used to smoke cigarettes when he was young; he would take the half-finished buds his father Sunil Dutt discarded, it said.
Sanjay Dutt's education
Later, he was sent to a boarding school in Sanawar. The Lawrence School where he studied, he would reportedly write letters to his family from the school and wait for a reply from his mother. He was just 10 when he joined the school, and he used to get very homesick and break down crying, as per reports. When he came home for a holiday one time, he was asked by his father if he would like to work in a movie, and that set the ball rolling and he was seen in the movie Reshma Aur Shera in the role of a qawwali singer.
As per reports from local tabloids, in his school days, Sanjay Dutt was a "wild" child. He would sneak out of the hostel and go to a nearby village, to allegedly buy tharra (country liquor) and eat better food. After he graduated from school, he reportedly moved back to Mumbai and joined Elphinstone college for a degree in Arts.
