A Hindi film after over three years, Priyanka Chopra would have huge expectations from The Sky is Pink. These expectations were partly fulfilled with the Shonali Bose directorial being almost unanimously lauded by the critics. However, it’s not good news, as far as the box office collections are concerned, if day one collections are anything to go by. The romantic-family drama had a slow start, earning Rs 2.50 crore on Friday, as per trade reports.
Despite positive reviews all around for The Sky is Pink, the movie did not have a great start. Certain movies take a slow start in the morning shows and if the word-of-mouth is good, the footfalls pick up towards the evening shows. However, no major change was witnessed in the case of the movie, also starring Farhan Akhtar, Zaira Wasim and Rohit Saraf. In fact, the movie’s opening day collections are lower than Priyanka’s last Hindi film Jai Gangaajal, which had earned Rs 5.5 crore on release day. However, several movies have picked up on Saturday and Sunday after a poor first day and that is definitely possible in the case of The Sky is Pink because of the impressive critical response.
Other successes to blame?
It is not yet clear if Hrithik Roshan-Tiger Shroff’s War doing historic business at the other end had anything to do with The Sky is Pink’s unimpressive opening. The action film is being tipped to be the highest-grossing film of this year, with collections inching close to Rs 250 crore in less than 10 days. On the other hand, Sye Raa Narasimha Reddy is still doing well in the South circuits. DC’s Joker is enjoying decent footballs.
The Sky is Pink is the story of Priyanka Chopra and Farhan Akhtar, starting from how they fall in love, get married and start a family. However, things take a turn when their daughter, played by Zaira Wasim, is diagnosed with pulmonary fibrosis. The story is based on Aisha Chaudhary, a teenager who had taken up motivational speaking after being diagnosed. The movie also received applause at international festivals. The Sky is Pink has been produced by Siddharth Roy Kapur and Ronnie Screwvala. Priyanka Chopra is also one of the producers of the movie.
