Warwickshire is a part of the West Midlands in England. The place is famous for being a birthplace of William Shakespeare. It is an English non-metropolitan county.
Here are some of the best places to visit in Warwickshire:
Warwick Castle
Warwick Castle was built during 1068 by William the Conqueror. The castle was originally built with wooden motte-and-bailey but was rebuilt in the 12th century with stone. The castle is situated at the bend of River Avon. A chapel was built inside the castle by Sir Fulke Greville in the 1600s.
Lord Leycester Hospital
Lord Leycester Hospital is located next to the West Gate, High Street, Warwick. The hospital is a preserved building that is a reminder of the medieval courtyard architecture. It also runs a charity that supports ex-servicemen. The Hospital is said to have many famous visitors like Charles Dickens, Oscar Wilde and King George V.
St Nicholas Park
St Nicholas Park is situated in the centre of the Warwick village. It is commonly known among the residents as St Nick’s. The eastern side of the park was made into playing fields after World War II. It is maintained and improved by a group of individuals called ‘Friends of Nicholas Park’.
Collegiate Church of St Mary
This church is the member of Great Churches Group. It is a Church of England parish church. The foundations of this religious building were laid by the 2nd Earl of Warwick, Roger de Beaumont. Until the year 1546, it was also a college. Unfortunately, a major chunk of the church was destroyed in the Great Fire of Warwick in 1693.
Kenilworth Castle
The architectural historian Anthony Emery called the Kenilworth Castle the finest surviving example of a semi-royal palace of the later middle ages, significant for its scale, form, and quality of workmanship. Reportedly, the longest siege in Medieval English history was held in this castle in 1266. A castle with such a history is worth a visit.
