After 'Captain Marvel' Marvel Studios is now gearing up for another woman-centric superhero film, a stand-alone feature on the Avengers heroine 'Black Widow'. With Scarlett Johansson reprising her role as Natasha Romanoff in the spin-off franchise, now media reports suggest that British actor Florence Pugh, who known for her performance in the independent drama 'Lady Macbeth', is in talks to join the cast of the film.
Beating 70 others directors in the hunt to find a director for its second woman-centric superhero movie Black Widow, Marvel Studios have finally selected Australian filmmaker Cate Shortland to lead with the direction of the stand-alone movie. The movie’s script was penned by Jac Schaeffer, who is also the writer of the upcoming women-centric re-imagining of Dirty Rotten Scoundrels titled Nasty Women.
While the plots are being kept under tight wraps, it seems like it is going to be an internationally set story, centring on Johansson's Natasha Romanoff, who grew up as a KGB trained spy and assassin before becoming an agent of SHIELD and Avenger. As per media reports, Pugh will play the role of an antagonist in the upcoming venture. Reportedly, she will be featured as Romanoff's moral opposite in the film.
As per media reports, the film is scheduled to go on floors in June in London. While the film will mark Pugh's debut in the Marvel cinematic universe, it won't be her first time playing a spy. The actress has been previously featured as an undercover agent on British television miniseries 'The Little Drummer Girl'.
