The film was produced on a budget of $62.5 million, Joker reached a worldwide total gross of $975 million on November 8, 2019. This is approximately 15 times more than its production budget. The film has topped Jim Carrey’s The Mask, which garnered $351 million on a $23 million budget. In terms of budget versus international profit, Joker ranks top when it comes to comic book films.
Joker has grossed all this without making it to China, as it is one of the biggest markets in the world. According to reports, it is also expected that Joker will reach the $1 billion mark in the near future, making it the first R-rated movie to ever do so.
Other Profitable films
The other most profitable comic book movies are Venom which grossed $854 million on a budget of $90 million, Batman which garnered $411 million on a budget of $35 million, Deadpool made $783 million on a budget of $58 million, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles garnered $200 million on a budget of $13.5 million, The Mask made $351 million on a budget of $23 million.
It has been a bumpy trial and error process for Warner Bros. in figuring out how to construct their connected DC landscapes, while they have seen major success with mostly standalone entries such as Aquaman, Wonder Woman, Shazam!. Making movies with these types of production budgets like $160 million, $150 million, and $100 million clearly involves inherent risks.
