Singer Sam Smith is now changing pronouns to they/them. The 27-year-old came out as non-binary earlier this year and wanted to change the way of being addressed. The singer took to social media on September 13 to announce gender-neutral pronoun change and the journey of accepting their identity. In an emotional statement they announced that after a lifetime of being at war with their gender, they have decided to embrace themself for who they are, inside and out.
“Today is a good day so here goes. I’ve decided I am changing my pronouns to THEY/THEM ❤ after a lifetime of being at war with my gender I’ve decided to embrace myself for who I am, inside and out. I’m so excited and privileged to be surrounded by people that support me in this decision but I’ve been very nervous about announcing this because I care too much about what people think but fuck it! I understand there will be many mistakes and misgendering but all I ask is you please please try. I hope you can see me as I see myself now. Thank you”. Smith said.
"Visible and open"
The singer also promoted activists and leaders of the non-binary and trans community who helped them understand and get clarity about gender neutrality. They tagged Laverne Cox, Tom Rasmussen, Munroe Bergdorf to name a few. Smith also went on to explain gender fluidity in a string of tweets. They also tweeted that they are still not at the stage where they can completely explain or speak about what non-binary means exactly. For now, they are just "Visible and open". They are also willing to explain gender neutrality to fans and also ready to answer questions about the same.

The announcement came after the artist came out as gender non-binary in March, claiming that they are neither male nor female. They think that they float somewhere in between. They also claimed that non-binary and genderqueer is not identified in any gender. They believe that one is a mixture of all different things and one is their own special creation.
Smith gets support
Toryn Glavin, trans engagement manager at LGBT charity Stonewall, reportedly said that they're delighted that Sam Smith is able to speak openly about their gender identity, and their visibility. They will have a huge impact on many non-binary people. Glavin also claimed that it is still far too hard for people to be open and accepted for who they are. They further added that their charity will keep campaigning until every LGBT person will be accepted without any exception.
