Robert Pattinson's Batman gets a villain, Riddler cast after Catwoman

Matt Reeves' upcoming directorial venture The Batman has found its villain 'Riddler' in American actor Paul Dano who has joined the cast of the film as the caped crusader's arch-enemy. The Emmy-nominated actor's new role was recently announced by Warner Brothers.

About Dano's role

Dano's character Edward Nashton is a man who in the comics goes by Edward Nygma alias Riddler. The character has been showcased as a former employee at Wayne Enterprises who venerates Bruce Wayne prior to adopting an evil path. 

The character was first created by Bill Finger and Dick Sprang, The Riddler is a supervillain who challenges Batman by leaving clues and riddles for the world's greatest detective to solve in order to catch him. Since the villain debuted in 1948's Detective Comics No. 140, the character has become one of the most famous Bat-villains appearing in movies and cartoons including some years as a good guy. 

In the first season of classic Batman series, Frank Gorshin had essayed the role of the villain before John Astin took over the role. Dano will join Zoe Kravitz who shall play Catwoman/Selina Kyle, Jeffrey Wright as Commissioner Gordon of the Gotham City P.D and Rober Pattinson as the cape crusader Batman alias Bruce Wayne. 

Paul Dano was recently nominated for an Emmy for essaying the role of series Escape at Dannemora and  2018 film Wildlife. His other films include Love and Mercy, Prisoners, 12 Years a SlaveThere Will Be Blood, Little Miss Sunshine, Youth and Okja, among others.

Earlier, actor Jonah Hill was in talks to play either the Riddler or Penguin, but the deal did not go ahead.

When will The Batman release? 

According to reports, filming is scheduled to begin this year later or in early next year. The movie is said to have a balanced take on The Batman and will showcase many villains. Ben Affleck was the last actor to play Batman on the big screen in 2016 Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and 2017 Justice League. The first move in the trilogy series is scheduled to release on June 25, 2021.
