Fans of Star Wars might remember the mysterious and deadly bounty hunter Boba Fett, who was a serious threat to the heroes of the original trilogy. Boba Fett himself was a member of the Mandalorian race, a group of highly trained warriors who were well known for their martial skills. The creators of The Mandalorian have confirmed that the protagonist of the show will not be Boba Fett. The lead character will be a solitary Mandalorian gunfighter who has never been seen before in the Star Wars franchise. The show is also set seven years after the last movie of the Original Trilogy, Return of the Jedi, and will hence be set after the defeat of the Empire and the death of the Emperor Palpatine

Pedro Pascal, best known for his role as Oberyn Martell in Game of Thrones, will be playing the role of the masked gunfighting Mandalorian in the show. His character was unnamed during the promotions for the show, however, the first episode might have revealed who the Mandalorian truly is. Taika Waititi, director of Thor: Ragnarok, will be the voice actor for the android IG-11. IG-11 is a droid of the same model as  IG-88, a popular bounty hunter that is well-loved by fans of the Star Wars extended universe. Other actors that will be featured in the show include Gina Carano, Carl Weathers, Werner Herzog, Emily Swallow and Nick Nolte.
