Disney's streaming service, Disney + will soon be streaming the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe collection of 23 movies to date. However, two Spider-Man films Spider-Man: Homecoming and Spider-Man: Far From Home are unlikely to be included.
Spidey movies sole properties of Sony
Ricky Strauss, who is the head of content and marketing for the streaming service said that they do not have any plans yet to bring those two movies to Disney+. According to the terms of the agreement between Disney and Sony, that was renewed this year once again, Sony handles the distribution of the solo Spider-Man films. While Marvel retains the right to feature Spidey in all their films, the right of the stand-alone films, even if they are set up in the backdrop of the larger MCU are the sole properties of Sony.
Since there have been no further talks between Disney and Sony, the stand-alone films might not be available on Disney+ any time soon. Ricky Strauss himself has said that while he loves his friends at Sony, they do not have any immediate plans to bring those films to the streaming service. However, he said that all the Spider-Man animated shows will be available on the streaming service under the Marvel banner.
A ray of hope
But he also left us with hope for the future when he said: "But who knows what can happen in the future." This line would be enough for the internet to speculate that Disney and Sony might be in secret talks.
Meanwhile, Netflix still remains a major roadblock for Disney+. Netflix still retains the streaming right for Black Panther, Ant-man and the Wasp, Avengers: Infinity Wars and Thor: Ragnarok until the end of 2019. After the contract with Netflix expires, these movies will become available in Disney+ beginning in 2020.
