'Super 30' Movie Review: Hrithik Roshan's incredible performance + emotional-laden hard-hitting realities = positive investment for cine-goers
Hrithik Roshan is finally back on the silver screen after a hiatus of two years. With a biopic on his hands, Roshan has a lot riding on him.
With a cameo in a Marathi film, and after 'Kaabil' with Yami Gautam, Hrithik Roshan is finally back on the silver screen after a hiatus of two years. With a biopic on his hands, Roshan has a lot riding on him. 'Super 30' narrates the life and hardships of Mathematics wizard Anand Kumar, so was the lead actor able to create on-screen magic with this epic story, Let's find out?
Setting the Scene:
The film starts with Anand Kumar (Hrithik Roshan), the son of a mere postmaster whose dream is to study in one of the world's top universities, Cambridge. However, due to a sudden turn in events, he is unable to do so and quickly turns to teach in a coaching center, called Excellence. But due to drunken epiphany Anand realizes that he wants to help and teach the economically impoverished of Bihar who cannot afford IIT coaching. "Raja Ka Beta Raja Nahi Banega, Raja vahi Banega jo Haqdaar Hoga", is a dialogue which is heard often throughout the film which hits the viewer with a flurry of emotions. Roshan's impactful and heartfelt performance is a plus point. Keeping the bad prosthetics aside, the lead underplays the anger, joy, and pain felt by his character thus making the audience believe in the story of Anand Kumar.
Plot:
Anand Kumar's (Hrithik Roshan) constant battle is with Lalan Singh who runs Excellence coaching, and who was also Kumar's previous employer. Because of the latter's quest for teaching underprivileged children, the coaching center takes a hard hit and many children start leaving, as Kumar was the USP. Soon the tussle between them becomes full-blown as Lalan's men try their best to bring Anand down, going to the extent of blackmailing and threatening to kill him. The film is sure to take you back in the 80s during the socialist times in Hindi cinema where the hero had modest means and whose life has not presented many opportunities with. The privileged have been portrayed with absolute cynicism in the drama, and the story essentially revolves around a charitable maths tutor who braved stiff opposition from the capitalist coaching classes. The writer, Sanjeev Dutta makes it an inspiring narrative by blending the depravity and drive of those unwilling to settle for a lesser life.
Verdict:
As Hrithik Roshan returns to the silver screen after a period of two years, one can say that with his impactful performance, he has done every bit of justice to the film! Although in various scenes, the tone is too melodramatic, Roshan still delivers aptly and acts as a saving grace. Mrunal Thakur too holds her space, given her limited screen time. The surprise is Pankaj Tripathi, who one can define as the show stealer! His role as the Education Minister lights up the screen every time he is present and his dialogue delivery is sure to leave you chuckling.
