Music directors have been the key element behind the success of a song but they decided to sing their own songs. Here are music directors turned singers

With the genre of films taking a shift from commercial to more of content-oriented movies, there is a major change in the music industry too. Music directors play an essential role to make a song loved by the audiences. Gone are the times when the success of the song depends on the singer. Today, music directors prefer to sing songs on their own. Many music directors like Vishal-Shekhar, A.R.Rehman, Vishal Bhardwaj and many others decided to turn into singers for their own songs. Pritam seems to be the only one who has, for the time being, been able to stay away from the pattern. Here is a list of the music directors who turned into singers.

Salim and Sulaiman Merchant

Salim and Sulaiman Merchant are among India’s most respected composers. They have worked in more than 100 films including Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi, Fashion, Band Baja Baraat, Heroine, etc. They have also composed several records including cinematic, folk, electronica, and Sufi influences. Salim and Sulaiman have an upcoming Hollywood project â€˜Sold’, that has been the major talk of the town. The duo has also performed across the world including FIFA World Cup 2010. Salim and Sulaiman have believed to redefine the scenario of music in India. Some songs sung by the duo are Haareya, Maula Mere Lele Meri Jaan, Tujh Mein Rab Dikhta Hai, etc.

A.R. Rahman

A.R.Rahman is considered by many as the world’s most prominent and prolific music director. His works are notable for integrating Eastern classical music with electronic music sounds, world music genres, and traditional orchestral arrangements. Rahman has given his contributions to several different lingual music industries. This includes Malayalam, Hindi, and English music industries. He made his debut in 1992 when he started Panchathan Record Inn, a music recording and mixing studio. His album, Vande Matram is one of the largest selling Indian non-film album to date. He is a two-time winner and five-times nominee of the Academy Award, Oscar. Some of the movies that he has composed songs for are Sanju, Rockstar, Jootha Hi Sahi, Slumdog Millionaire, Ghajini, Range de Basanti, etc. Rahman has given some iconic soundtracks like Jai Ho, Phir Se Ud Chala, Khwaja Mere Khwaja, Nadaan Parinde, etc.

Vishal-Shekhar

Vishal-Shekhar is an Indian music producing duo comprising of prominent musicians Vishal Dadlani and Shekhar Ravjani. The duo has given many blockbuster hits. The duo is widely regarded as the architects of modern Bollywood music. They made their debut in 1999 with the movie Pyar Mein Kabhi Kabhi. The duo composed music for movies like Taxi No. 9211, Golmaal:  Fun Unlimited, Om Shanti Om, etc. They have given music for movies like Sultan, Student of the Year  Chennai Express, Befikre and more. He has sung some iconic songs like Tu Meri, Bezubaan Phir Se, Desi Girl, Ghagra, Gulaboo, etc.
