Period dramas have been popular in Indian cinema over the years. Be it the iconic Mughal-E-Azam to one of the recent blockbusters, Baahubali, films on various moments of history, some real and some fictional, have been adapted for the big screen. In recent times, Sanjay Leela Bhansali brought to life the story of Peshwa Bajirao of the Maratha lineage, and his love story with Mastani and the recreation of the 16th century poetry Padmavat. 19th freedom fighters like Rani Lakshmibai and Narasimha Reddy were adapted this year in the movies, Manikarnika and Sye Raa Narasimha Reddy respectively. After the Kannada industry too joined the bandwagon with Kolar Gold Fields (KGF), even the Malayalam film industry is making period action dramas. After Kayamkulam Kochunni last year, Mammootty is also bringing one such historic event of the 18th century to the screen. The veteran stars in Mamangam, a war story set around the Mamankam festival in Kerala during the era. The trailer of the movie hit the screens on Saturday and promises a grand action-packed drama.
Mammooty looks extremely convincing in the character of Chaver, as per reports, who leads the team of warriors called Chaaverukal, to fight against the Zamorin rulers. Most of the action deals with sequences involving skilled sword-fight sequences, blasts and horse-riding sequences. Be it the look of the actors in a bun and the dhoti, attention to detail seems to be on point. The dialogues too are quite intense.
