The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) is an American movie franchise and shared universe based on a series of Marvel Studios’ independently produced superhero films based on characters that appear in American comic books published by Marvel Comics. Also included in the MCU are short films, TV series and digital series. The shared universe was established by crossing common plot elements, settings, cast, and characters, much like the original Marvel Universe in comic books.

Back in 2008, Iron Man kick-started the MCU. The film garnered over 500 million dollars at the global box office. Independent superhero adventures like that of Captain America, Thor and Iron Man formed the team-up film Avengers along with upcoming Black Widow and Hawk-Eye in 2012.

The secondary phase of MCU included cult characters

The second phase of the MCU included extended characters like the Winter Soldier, Falcon, Scarlet Witch and Vision. These characters were seen fighting against each other in 2016’s Captain America: Civil War. The film led into the third phase of the MCU which included films like Spider-Man Homecoming and Thor Ragnarok. Avengers: Infinity War turned out to be a global phenomenon at the box office earning over 1.5 billion dollars.

The interlinked storytelling of the MCU was reportedly the dream of Marvel Studios’ head Kevin Fiege. He has been the consistent head producer of the films which have now grossed over 10 billion dollars globally. Along with big superhero films, Marvel has also extended its reach in small TV series connected to the film's timeline like Agents of Shield, Daredevil and Jessica Jones.

Lastly comes Avengers: Endgame, the 22nd film of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The film is produced by Marvel Studios. The film is a continuation of Avengers: Infinity War (2018). According to reports, Avengers: Endgame is the fastest film to reach a box office collection of $500 million worldwide in just 3 days. The film was re-released, and ended overtaking Avatar as a highest-grossing film ever.
