The Union Minister of Information and Broadcasting Prakash Javadekar has asked for a report from the I&B ministry officials on the content of the reality television show Bigg Boss. This comes days after various letters were written to the Ministry and Prakash Javadekar himself. From Karni Sena to BJP MLA Nand Kishor Gurjar, even the Confederation of All India Traders, have written letters seeking a ban on the show. The letters have broadly accused the show of airing “vulgar” content that is against Indian traditions.
Response from I&B Minister
Prakash Javadekar has responded to the letters from the various organisations by saying that “I have received the letters and have asked ministry officials for a report on what is being shown (on the Big Boss show). We will be getting the report this week.”
UP MLA’s letter
The MLA from Loni constituency in UP, Nand Kishore Gurjar, had personally written a letter to the Union Minister seeking an immediate ban on the show. Gurjar in his letter said that "The show is against the cultural ethos of the country and highly objectionable intimate scenes were a part of it. Couples of different communities were being made to share their bed with one-another which is unacceptable”. He also complained about couples of different communities being made to become 'bed partners' in the show.
Karni Sena’s letter
The Karni Sena also wrote a letter to the Information and Broadcasting ministry requesting a ban. In their letter, Karni Sena said, "Under the Hindu act, I request the government to immediately ban the show because it is being telecasted on national TV. Bigg Boss show has totally ruined the Indian culture”. Soon after Karni Sena wrote this letter, a hashtag was also seen trending on Twitter. This hashtag was called #BanBiggBoss.
All India Trade Confederation’s letter
In another letter addressed to the Union Minister of I&B, the Confederation of All India Traders requested the Ministry to put Bigg Boss under the scanner. The letter said, “Our country’s traditional and cultural values are being tarnished in the lust of TRP and profits. The 'Bed Friend Forever' concept in the show is deplorable and against all ethics of the television world. We demand that shows like Bigg Boss be subjected to a censor board just as films are.
