Sumbul Touqeer says comments about skin colour deeply affected her

In an interview with Pinkvilla, Sumbul Touqeer explained that her career roadblocks were primarily mental rather than physical. While no one physically hindered her ambitions, she said that she experienced mental barriers, particularly involving comments about her skin tone during the early days of her career. She shared that such statements had a deep impact on her mental well-being.

The actress candidly shared that she faced adversity regarding her skin colour at the beginning of her journey in the entertainment industry. She said that the criticism about her appearance, particularly her skin tone, deeply affected her self-confidence and mental state. She recalled how these comments weighed heavily on her during that period.

"Thoda sa skin color leke pehle starting mein bohot huya, toh aapko shayad utna zyada affect na karey raste mein, but aapko mentally bohot zyada affect karta hain wo ki koi aapko skin color ke liye bolte hain ki you are not looking nice or anything, toh wo cheezein mujhe bohot zyada lagti thi, but dheere dheere karke when i got my pehle wala show, waha se sari cheezein khatam ho gayi," she said.

Sumbul Touqeer's career trajectory took a positive turn after she bagged her first show Imlie. She said that with her breakthrough, the negative comments and mental hurdles began to dissipate. She added that her success helped her regain her self-assuredness and put an end to the mental roadblocks that had once plagued her.
