Babita Kumari claims her family got only a small fraction of the Dangal collection
In a conversation with News 24, Babita Kumari hinted at her compensation for Dangal. Though reluctant at first, the former wrestler shared that she got less than 1% of the movie's total collection. The host confirmed and asked the wrestler, “Out of ₹2,000 crore made from Dangal, the Phogat family received only ₹1 crore?” The wrestler-turned-politician confirmed it with a simple nod and a firm “Yes.”
She further stated that her father asked her to not worry about the money they made but the love and respect they earned from the people following the film's release. In the movie, Sanya Malhotra essayed the role of Babita Phogat. She recalled her father (Mahavir Phogat essayed by Aamir Khan in the movie), telling her, "Nahi, papa ne ek cheez kahi thi ki logo ka pyaar aur sammaan chahiye." (No, father had said one thing – we want people's love and respect.)."
Netizens have mixed response to Aamir Khan's compensation for Babita Phogat's family in Dangal
Earlier reports have claimed that Aamir Khan took home a base salary of ₹35 crores for the sports drama based on the family of Mahavir Phogat and his daughters. However, the actor's real earnings came from profit-sharing from the film which went on to make more than ₹2000 crore. Amid this, Babita Phogat's statements have gone viral on social media.
Some social media users claim that a contract must have been drawn before the family greenlit the film and they should have negotiated the compensation at the time. They also shared the makers have not been unfair and kept their word by sharing the amount that was decided by both parties. However, some netizens argued that the filmmakers should have shared a part of the profit with the Phogat family after the movie became a super hit.
