About the film
The film portrays the heroic story of seven Indians who attempt to liberate Goa from the Portuguese colonial rule. A Muslim poet by the name of Anwar Ali is played by Amitabh Bachchan, his character is from Bihar along with five other men, all belonging from different religions and parts of India. They are joined by their seventh comrade Maria played by Shehnaz Vahanvaty. Her character is a native of Portuguese-occupied Goa. Their motive is to raise nationalist sentiments in the state by hoisting Indian flags on Portuguese forts and buildings. The cast features Madhu, Utpal Dutt, Shehnaz, A. K. Hangal, Anwar Ali and Amitabh Bachchan.

- Amitabh Bachchan was paid a sum of ₹5,000 for his first role. This was supposed to be his full salary whether the film took one or five years to make.
- Amitabh Bachchan’s character was named after his friend and co-star Anwar Ali.
- Amitabh Bachchan went on to win the National Award for the Most Promising Newcomer for Saat Hindustani.
- Primarily Nina Singh was the original female lead for Saat Hindustani, however, Neena went to Delhi and did not turn up for the shooting in Goa. Later, she was replaced with Shahnaz.
- Tinnu Anand was signed to play one of the seven protagonists in the film. However, director K A Abbas replaced his role with a newcomer Amitabh Bachchan.
