Amitabh Bachchan's journey as the host of Kaun Banega Crorepati
Amitabh Bachchan started hosting the TV game show Kaun Banega Crorepati in the year 2000. He has been a constant part of the show except for one season.
Amitabh Bachchan is known as the Shahenshah of Bollywood. The veteran actor has delivered some of the most memorable movies. His characters have become legendary and some of the most iconic ones in the Indian film industry. Amitabh is not just known for his excellent acting in movies, but also for hosting the TV reality show Kaun Banega Crorepati.
Success of season one of KBC
The first season of the Indian version of Kaun Banega Crorepati was aired in the year 2000 on Star Television. KBC was the first of its kind TV show in India. The format of the show was unique, where Bachchan would ask a series of questions based on various themes and subjects. The player would start winning prize money as he gives the correct answers. The first question is for ₹ 1,000, which slowly climbs up to a digit in crores. For season 1, the winning price was ₹ 1 Crore. The player’s seat was called the ‘hot seat’. There are also ‘lifelines’ which help the players if they are stuck on a question.
Amitabh Bachchan came back for the season 2 of the show in 2005. It was named Kaun Banega Crorepati Dwitiya. The winning prize for this was ₹ 2 crores. The show was unfortunately shut down halfway as Amitabh fell ill in 2006. For Season 3, Shahrukh Khan took over Bachchan’s spot as the host. After 3 years, KBC came with the Season 4. This 2010 installment was moved from STAR Plus to Sony TV. The show was given the tagline Koi Bhi Sawaal Chota Nahi Hota. A jackpot question was introduced in the show worth ₹ 5 crores. A timer was also added for each question until the player reaches to question number 7 worth ₹ 3,20,000 Lakhs.
Still going strong
After 2010, Amitabh Bachchan returned to the TV every year until 2014. Season 5 in 2011 introduced the Ghar Baithe Jeeto Jackpot segment to allow viewers to play at home. The 7th season in 2013 increased the total prize money to ₹ 7 Crores. After 2014, the show took a 3-year gap.
2017 saw the return of Amitabh Bachchan and Kaun Banega Crorepati for Season 9. Season 10 was given an innovative tagline Kab Tak Rokoge. Currently, the show is on its 11th season, which airs from Monday to Friday from 9 to 10:30 pm and still has viewers hooked to their screens in this prime time slot.
