The dimensions and criteria for a 'good' film in Bollywood are changing in recent times. Nowadays, content is the king for the viewers. There are several small-budget films which have won many laurels in the past due to their strong subject and powerful performances. This year also saw some impressive films which were the talk of the town due to their gritty subject and notable performances. However, in spite of their imposing message and performances, some films of this year failed to get their due recognition. These films also garnered a moderate response at the box office despite the remarkable content.
Here are some of the underrated films of this year
Batla House
The film is not only an underrated one but is also touted to be one of the best performances of John Abraham. It revolved around the infamous Batla House shootout which took place on September 19, 2008. John's character was based on police officer Sanjeev Kumar Yadav who played an important role in the real incident. With some brilliant performances, intricate filmmaking by Nikhil Advani and some clap-worthy dialogues, the film surely deserved more recognition and accolades from the masses.
Section 375
The trailer of the film had grabbed several eyeballs due to the gritty subject and the high octane performances by the lead actors, Akshaye Khanna and Richa Chadha. The film revolved around Section 375 of the Indian Penal Code. The plot revolved around a young woman accusing her employer of raping her while Akshaye and Richa played lawyers who are on a quest to defend their respective clients. The film had reportedly acquired a lot of acclaim from the critics with the courtroom scenes being the high point of the film. Nevertheless, it failed to get the required recognition and also acquired only Rs 22 crore at the box office.
The Sky Is Pink
The film was an emotional rollercoaster ride as it revolved around the life of motivational speaker Aisha Chaudhury who was diagnosed with pulmonary fibrosis. The film also showed the turmoil of her parents which were essayed by Priyanka Chopra and Farhan Akhtar. The movie had a strong narrative and some power-packed performances. Despite receiving many acclaims, it did not get its due credit at the box office and acquired only Rs 34 crore at the box office, reportedly.
