The trailer for Ayushmann Khurrana's next film Bala was recently launched on YouTube. Netizens were quick to point out a big flaw in the film. Bhumi Pednekar was seen playing the role of a dusky girl, netizens were disappointed that Bhumi Pednekar was chosen to play the role and darkened with make-up instead of choosing a naturally dusky actor in the film. The portrayal of Bhumi Pednekar as a dark-skinned girl was reportedly considered to be disappointing and offensive to many fans. Many netizens were quick to share their opinion about this misrepresentation in the film over Twitter.
The film is already evidently surrounded by a lot of controversies. The film has some uncanny similarities to another film set to release soon titled Ujda Chaman. The makers of Ujda Chaman have reportedly sent a legal notice to the makers of Bala. The film has evidently hit rocky waters after Bhumi Pednekar's darkened look, it has also sparked a debate about Bollywood's dark skin representation. A similar debate had sparked a few months back when Hrithik Roshan played a character who was darkened with makeup in the film Super 30.
Netizens react to Bhumi Pednekar's look in Bala
Just saw Bala trailer. Why couldn't they just use a dark skinned actress than putting black makeup on fair skinned Bhumi?

So Bala is about a man who suffers from hair loss, who is played by Ayushman, and a dark skinned girl who gets mocked because of that. However, instead of maybe hiring a real dark skinned actress they just cast Bhumi and further darken her face. Ironic, to say the least 🤦🏻♀️ pic.twitter.com/IH9ImpPbyq
