That feeling when the main hero in the film has achieved something huge for the country and the national anthem plays in the background; it's very common for viewers to well up and get goosebumps. Here are the top patriotic movies that Bollywood has given us.
1. Border (1997)
Border was based on the Battle of Longewala in 1971. The film had an ensemble cast of Sunny Deol, Suniel Shetty, Akshaye Khanna, Jackie Shroff, Sudesh Berry, Puneet Issar, and Kulbhushan Kharbanda. It also won three National Awards including Best Film on National Integration. Even today, the film is held highly for its anti-war message and powerful performances.
2. Lagaan: Once Upon a Time in India (2001)
Lagaan was set in the Victorian Era when India was colonised by the Britishers. Directed by Ashutosh Gowariker, the film starred Aamir Khan, Gracy Singh, Rachel Shelley, and Paul Blackthorne. It was also India’s official entry at the Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language Film that year. The film was screened at various international film festivals and also won eight National Film Awards.
3. The Legend of Bhagat Singh (2002)
The 2002 Ajay Devgn starrer was a biographical film based on Bhagat Singh, a socialist revolutionary who fought for Indian independence. The film traced the life of Bhagat Singh from his childhood to the day he was hanged to death in 1931. The film even won two National Awards and three Filmfare Awards.
4. Rang De Basanti (2006)
Rang De Basanti starred Aamir Khan, Siddharth Narayan, Soha Ali Khan, Kunal Kapoor, R. Madhavan, Sharman Joshi, Atul Kulkarni, and Alice Patten. The film is based on five people who have a perceptional change while filming for a documentary on India’s freedom fighters. The film went on to garner critical and commercial acclaim. It was also India’s official entry to the Academy Awards in the Best Foreign Language Film category.
5. Chak de! India (2007)
Chak De! India was about a women’s hockey team that was partially inspired by India’s win at the 2002 Commonwealth Games. The film explored stereotypes such as feminism, sexism, ethnic prejudice, and religious bigotry. The film went on to bag numerous awards including the National Film Award for Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment.
