Bollywood's five best sports movies and biopics through the years

The Indian film industry has an array of many sports movies and biopics. The following months will see the release of two more- Saandh ki Aankh and '83.

The Bollywood film industry churns multiple movies in various genres every week. What seems to be the recent favourite of many filmmakers are sports biopics. These movies beautifully trace the lives of various stalwarts in India when it comes to sports. Here are some of the movies that deal with the sports genre.

Sports biopic trace the story of either a sportsperson or a historical event in any sport

Dangal

Dangal is a blockbuster hit from the year 2016 that traces the story of Mahavir Singh Phogat and his two daughters Geeta Phogat and Babita Phogat. Geeta and Babita are international wrestlers who represent India and have won medals for the country. The movie was the debut of the four actors that played the characters of Geeta and Babita- Fatima Sana Shaikh, Sanya Malhotra, Zaira Wasim and Suhani Bhatnagar. The movie was directed by Nitesh Tiwari.

Bhaag Milkha Bhaag

The movie Bhaag Milkha Bhaag is the story of The Flying Sikh, Milkha Singh, who is an Indian former track and field sprinter.  The movie stars Farhan Akhtar as Milkha Singh, along with Sonam Kapoor, Pavan Malhotra and Yograj Singh. The movie looks at the trauma that Milkha had to go through because of the India-Pakistan partition and then his journey towards becoming the sprint superstar of India.

M. S. Dhoni: The Untold Story

The movie M. S. Dhoni: The Untold Story was released in 2016. The Chhichhore star Sushant Singh Rajput played the character of the former Indian captain M. S. Dhoni. The movie also stars Disha Patani, Kiara Advani, Anupam Kher, and Bhoomika Chawla. The movie looked at the story of Dhoni, right from his childhood, to his teenage, his romantic tie-ups and his time as a railway employee. The movie was directed by Neeraj Pandey.

Mary Kom

Priyanka Chopra starred in this 2014 biopic Mary Kom. Mary Kom is an Indian boxer, and the movie is a chronicle of her life and her struggles. The movie also stars Sunil Thapa, Darshan Kumaar and Robin Das. It is an Omung Kumar directed movie.

Soorma

Soorma is the story of Sandeep Singh, a professional field hockey player. Sandeep got shot in an accident which left him paralyzed for a year. But his grit and determination resulted in a full recovery and he played for India in the year 2010. This courageous character is played by the Punjabi star Diljit Dosanjh. Taapsee Pannu, Angad Bedi, Vijay Raaz, and Satish Kaushik.

There are many upcoming sports biopics in Bollywood. October 25 will see the release of Saand ki Aankh which is the story of the world’s oldest sharpshooters Chandro and Prakashi Tomar. The two will be played by Bhumi Pednekar and Taapsee Pannu respectively. Next will come ’83, which is the story of how the Indian cricket team was victorious in the 1983 ICC World Cup. The movie stars Ranveer Singh as then captain Kapil Dev and it is produced by Kabir Bedi.
