Bollywood’s NSD graduates who have made it big in the industry

The National School of Drama has given Bollywood some truly exceptional actors. Here is a look at some of the biggest NSD graduates in the industry today.

The theatre arena has always produced great actors. Performing live in a theatre is a vastly different experience as compared to performing in a film. Over the years, we have seen several versatile actors being imported from the National School of Drama (NSD), which is a theatre training institute in New Delhi. Here is a look at some of them.

1. Shah Rukh Khan

Shah Rukh Khan was a part of the NSD during his time at Delhi University. He was a part of Barry John’s Theatre Action Group, a theatre group based in Delhi. He then worked in the television industry and finally debuted in Bollywood with Raj Kanwar’s Deewana in 1992.

2. Irrfan Khan

Irrfan Khan received a scholarship to study at NSD and he moved to Mumbai after graduating. He then kept acting in many theatre plays before bagging his first Bollywood film, Salaam Bombay! He is a recipient of the Padma Shri Award and National Film Award.

3. Nawazuddin Siddiqui

The Sacred Games star is one of the most acclaimed actors in Bollywood. After he moved to Delhi, he got interested in acting. Without any delay, he got himself enrolled in NSD. He trained alongside Saurabh Shukla and Manoj Bajpai with the Sakshi Theatre Group.

4. Om Puri

The late actor started his career as a theatre actor at Films and Television Institute of India (FTII) and NSD. He went on to act in many iconic films like Dharavi, Mirch Masala, Maqbool and Maachis. He has various awards in his kitty including two National Awards for Arohan and Ardh Satya. Om Puri also won the Padma Shri Award in 1990.

5. Paresh Rawal

Even though he was not from an acting background, Paresh Rawal has delivered some of the most memorable film performances of all time. His most popular plays include Kishan vs Kanhaiya and Dear Father. He was also a regular at Mumbai’s Prithvi Theatre. His memorable comical roles in films include Hera Pheri, Malamaal Weekly, and Golmaal.
