From bringing the Indian rap culture into the forefront with 'Gully Boy' to breaking the glass ceiling with the portrayal of the sexual exploitation of a domestic help in 'Lust stories' Bollywood leading filmmaker Zoya Akhtar is known for breathing life into every story she tells.
Talking about the same, she shares, “It’s always great to see Indian cinema traveling and transcending across borders. As a filmmaker, it’s a very rewarding experience and more than that, it’s extremely thrilling to see a celebration of Indian films. I’m ecstatic to be invited and to be a part of IFFM 2019 in Melbourne, which is a melting pot of cultures. There’s a huge Indian community in Australia and I’m looking forward to taking Gully Boy there for a special screening and extending a discussion on cinema with Australian audiences”.
With her films ranging from 'Luck By Chance', 'Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara', 'Dil Dhadakne Do' and 'Gully Boy' all of which have roared in theatres. The director’s latest film, 'Gully Boy' and web series 'Lust Stories' and 'Made In Heaven' had raked humongous appreciation from across quarters.
Zoya's 'Gully Boy' had been screened in the Berlin Film Festival even before its release in India and she is hopeful of taking the upcoming film festival in Melbourne by storm too.
Inspired by the rappers of Dharavi, the director brought the unseen rap and hip-hop culture of this area into the limelight which ensured that the unheard and talented voices from India could also be seen and heard. This turned into a big leap for underground music and rappers who got worldwide acknowledgement.
Even as the audience was comprehending the emotional story of Murad from 'Gully Boy', Zoya enthralled fans once again with her web series, 'Made In Heaven' which showcased the grandeur with which Indian weddings take place. The director brought to life the concept of ‘Big Fat Indian Weddings’ with perfection in her web series.
Over the years, Zoya Akhtar has treated audiences to strong, character-driven films that have rocked the box office and also receivied critical acclaim.
