Whether or not the idea of watching movies in theaters has become obsolete since the introduction of over-the-top (OTT) media, has been the subject of debate in the industry. In recent days, the theatres have bounced back with a bunch of successful releases since the start of the year. Other arguments also suggest that the OTT releases are a good medium for the movie makers to launch projects that might not get a big opening in the theatres, thereby decreasing the pressure on box office numbers. Weighing in on the debate, Nikkhil Advani said there’s not much difference. The filmmaker added that while people think that the makers don’t feel pressure for OTT, it's actually the opposite as it spreads through the week and not just on a particular day.Nikkhil Advani | Image: InstagramNikkhil Advani on the difference between OTT and theatrical releases In a conversation with ANI, Nikkhil was asked about the different introductions of OTT made in theatres. To which the Kal Ho Naa Ho director replied, “Just as there is the pressure at the box office, what will be the number on Friday, on Saturday, or will the picture continue to rock the box office on Monday or not, people think that it does not happen on OTT but there the pressure spreads. The filmmaker added that OTT has changed the subject of the releases drastically. “It gets shared because OTT is not only a director medium. The platform has decided how this subject should be. Definitely, it's slumped because people now think that they would get this much on OTT. But, while South and North competition is just something we highlight on social media," said Nikkhil. He began working as an assistant to art-house film filmmakers such as Saeed Mirza, Kundan Shah, and Sudhir Mishra. Following that, he worked for Dharma Productions, the late Yash Johar, and Yash Raj Films.Nikkhil worked as an assistant director for the films Kuch Kuch Hota Hai and Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham. He made his directorial debut with a romantic comedy-drama Kal Ho Naa Ho. Nikkhil also directed the action comedy film Chandni Chowk to China.He is all set to come up with a film 'Vedaa' which stars John Abraham, Sharvari Wagh, and Abhishek Banerjee and will be released next year. He is also about to make a movie on the book 'Freedom at Midnight.'
