The Karwa Chauth festival is just around the corner and Bollywood has always celebrated it with much grandeur. There are many movies where the Karwa Chauth festival plays an important part in the plot. The festival includes a wife holding a fast for the healthy and long life of her husband. The fast is broken after she sees the moon and her husband feeds her the first morsel of food. Bollywood is often said to be responsible for popularising the concept of Karwa Chauth with its romantic scenes between the hero and heroine. Here are five such moments from Bollywood movies that have iconic Karwa Chauth scenes:
Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge
This movie is iconic for several reasons and one among them is the Karwa Chauth scene. Simran aka Kajol is celebrating her first Karwa Chauth and she wants to keep the fast for her lover Raj aka Shah Rukh Khan. But this seems impossible as Simran is already engaged to marry Kuldeep. However, the clever Simran pretends to faint just as she is supposed to look at her partner’s face during the ritual. Raj comes to her rescue and she gladly opens her eyes to see him. Under the pretext of reviving her, Raj also feeds her the first morsel. This scene has reportedly giving relationship goals to quite a few couples among their fans.
Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam
The Karwa Chauth festival is presented in this movie through the beautiful song, Chand Chupa Badal Mein. While the women of the household are waiting for the moon to rise and break their fast, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Salman Khan’s character are seen having a romantic moment on the terrace alone. As the lyrics go, Aishwarya is pleading the moon to rise while Salman is asking it not to. This song is also one of the most iconic and romantic numbers of Bollywood.
Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham
Although the second half of the movie is located in London, the characters are seen celebrating the Karwa Chauth festival with equal pomp and grandeur. The festival in the movie is celebrated with the dance number, Bole Chudiyaan. There is also a scene where Kajol’s character is performing the ritual for Shah Rukh Khan’s character. This Karan Johar directorial has surely given Karwa Chauth goals to women everywhere.
Baghban
While Baghban delivered the moral lesson of taking care of one’s parents, it also showed a romantic relationship between an elderly married couple. Separated by their children, Amitabh Bachchan and Hema Malini’s characters portray the significance of the Karwa Chauth festival in a heart-wrenching scene. Both of them fast for each other and later have a telephonic conversation for not being able to be together during the traditional rituals. The song Tu Yahaan Main Wahaan plays during this scene.
Babul
The Karwa Chauth scene in the movie shows Hema Malini and Rani Mukerji’s character fasting for their onscreen husband, Amitabh Bachchan and Salman Khan respectively. In the scene, Hema Malini is explaining Rani the significance of the Karwa Chauth festival. The movie beautifully depicts how festivals should be celebrated by families together. In the movie, Amitabh Bachchan and Hema Malini’s characters help their daughter-in-law remarry after the demise of their son.
