Panipat: The Great Betrayal is an upcoming historical movie directed by Ashutosh Gowariker. The movie is based on the Third Battle of Panipat, which took place in the year 1761. The battle was fought between the Maratha Empire and the King of Afghanistan, Ahmad Shah Abdali. Rohit Shelatkar, reported history and film fanatic, is producing the movie.
Panipat: The Great Betrayal will be releasing on December 6, 2019.
In a recent interview with a newspaper daily, Rohit shared that he had begun in research on the Third Battle of Panipat five years ago. Rohit talked about how the battle was a rare instance of bravery and courage. The Marathas had no personal benefit when they decided to fight against the Afghan army in support of the Mughals. The Maratha army travelled a thousand miles with only limited resources to help in a war against invaders.
Rohit Shelatkar was also asked why he decided to do a movie where the Marathas are on the losing side. Rohit replied that there is an array of films available on Chhatrapati Shivaji and Sambhaji Maharaj. Many are still unaware of who Sadashiv Rao Bhau was. Shelatkar added that though the battle was lost by the Marathas, the Afghans lost a major chunk of their army and never dared to invade India again. Rohit also added that there are many unknown aspects to Sadashiv’s character that will impress Maharashtrians as well as Indians all over the country.
In the same interview, Rohit also talked about his love for Gowariker’s previous work like Lagaan, Swades, and Jodhaa Akbar. He added that the movie is based purely on the extensive research done by himself and his team. They have even sourced details from archives in Pune.
The producer claimed that it was him who suggested Sanjay Dutt play Abdali. Kriti and Arjun were Ashutosh’s choice. Rohit Shelatkar has decided to give his profits from the movie to his Grand Maratha Foundation, which helps widows from Vidharbha in Maharashtra.
