Biopics are based on the life stories of well-known personalities. They are mostly well-received by the audience and also perform well at the box office. Not many directors in earlier times moved into this genre as the audience was not appreciative of such films. Over the years, biopics have started to receive attention. Biopics seem to have found their spot in Bollywood with the changing landscape of audiences and critic preferences. A large number of biopics that have released in recent years have not only been welcomed by the public, but they have also become Bollywood blockbusters. 

Popular political biopics in Bollywood

Thackeray

Nawazuddin Siddiqui played the character of the founder and president of the Shiv Sena, Balasaheb Thackeray, in the biopic Thackeray. The film was directed by Abhijit Panse and released in both Hindi and Marathi. The film released on January 25th, 2019. Nawazuddin was reportedly very pleased when he had the chance to play the party founder's role as his life story was very fascinating.

The Accidental Prime Minister

The role of former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh was played by Anupam Kher. This movie is based on the book The Accidental Prime Minister by Sanjay Baru. The first look of the film was shared by Anupam Kher on his Twitter handle. From the day it was released, the movie reportedly stirred up a lot of controversies. The film has also been released in Tamil and Telugu

PM Narendra Modi

The Bollywood actor Vivek Oberoi played PM Modi's role in the film. The film is called PM Narendra Modi. This unique film was released in India in 23 different languages. The movie was filmed across the country, including in Gujarat, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand. It reportedly stirred controversy soon after its release, but it is said to have done well among audiences.

Tashkent

This is another film that raised a storm in political circles after The Accidental Prime Minister. The film is based on the mysterious circumstances under which Lal Bahadur Shastri, India's second prime minister, died in Russia.
