Veteran Bollywood actor Rishi Kapoor, who has been quite vocal about several social causes, spoke up against co-operative society and banks scandal in the wake of the Punjab & Maharashtra Co-operative Bank (PMC) bank crisis. The actor in a recent social media post compared the current situation of 'racketeering' with his father Raj Kapoor's film Shree 420 which released back in 1955. The film centres around Raj Kapoor's character, a poor but educated orphan who comes to Bombay with dreams of success. He falls prey to an unethical lifestyle when a rich businessman, Sonachand, lures him into it.

The scam

The police registered a First Information Report (FIR) against the top officials of the Punjab & Maharashtra Co-operative Bank and the promoters of the HDIL. According to the prosecution, the bank continued giving loans to the debt-ridden HDIL from 2008 to 2019 despite the previous loans not being repaid. Several sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) such as criminal breach of trust, cheating, and forgery have been invoked against the accused. Along with Thomas, the promoters of HDIL, Rakesh and Sarang Wadhwan were arrested and sent to police custody till October 9. Out of 44 accounts, a total of 10 were linked to HDIL.
