Bollywood is steps ahead when talking about encouraging feminism in the country. From Chak De India to Dil Bole Hadippa and the recently released Saand Ki Aankh proved the women’s mettle. Most of the movies are based on real-life inspirations, such as Mary Kom and Dangal, while others are fictions primarily focused on promoting women sports. Check out some of the films which showcase blood, sweat and tears laden stories of sportswomen.
1. Bend it like Beckham (2002)
Helmed by Gurinder Chadha, this romantic comedy-drama film features Parminder Nagra, Jonathan Rhys Meyers, Juliet Stevenson, Keira Knightly, Shaznay Lewis and Archie Panjabi in prominent roles. The movie revolves around the youngest daughter of London based Sikh family expresses her interest in football. She is criticized for her inclination towards masculine sports by her own family. But she breaks all barriers to win laurels at the national level. Bend it Like Beckham is an eye-opener that showcases how women are primarily represented as family caregivers.
2. Chak De! India (2007)
This cult movie was directed by Shimit Amin and produced under the banner of Yash Raj Films. Chak De! India stars Shah Rukh Khan in the lead role. This sports film portrays women hockey players soaring heights despite them being looked down upon by the society. The movie revolves around the lessons of teamwork, perseverance and dedication to earn accolades and get the country rid of stereotypes about women being related to sports. Chak De! Bollywood actor Priyanka Chopra essayed the role of Mary Kom in the film. She won numerous accolades for her incredible performance as the protagonist. The storyline is based on the discrimination that eponymous boxer faces because of her region and gender. Despite her family’s disapproval, Mary Kom pursues her dream and get trained under a renowned coach. She goes through several struggles and makes headway towards success. Furthermore, she gets a supportive husband who encourages her to never give up. Priyanka Chopra skillfully displays moves of the male-dominated sport in this biographical sports movie.
4. Saand Ki Aankh (2019)
Directed by Tushar Hiranandani, Saand ki Aankh is a biographical drama movie. Lead actors Taapsee Pannu and Bhumi Pednekar reprise the role of 60-year-old sharpshooters Prakashi and Chandro Tomar. Saand Ki Aankh brilliantly showcases the bitter realities of remote parts of the country where women are treated badly and called useless by the men in their family. This movie talks about women empowerment and gives a live example of how age is just a number.
