What is M.A.R.D?
MARD initiative is a social campaign started in march 2013 by Bollywood actor and director Farhan Akhtar. MARD stands for Men Against Rape and Discrimination and it aims at spreading awareness against social evils. Many Bollywood as well as international stars including Shah Rukh Khan, Priyanka Chopra Jonas, Arjun Rampal, to name a few have extended their support towards the cause. The initiative aims at creating awareness in the minds of the youth through music.
Farhan Akhtar coined the initiative after an incident that took place in August 2012, where a lawyer was raped and murdered by the watchman. In March 2013, almost six years ago, Farhan Akhtar initiated the campaign. In an attempt to popularize the initiative, Farhan performed at a college in Bangalore wearing the logo of the initiative. He has also spread awareness via social media. Farhan also promoted the cause at the Indian Premier League season six before the Kolkata Knight Rider and Kings XI Punjab match. Akhtar distributed around 70,000 moustaches among the audiences.
In 2017, there was a concert held in Bandra, Mumbai to end violence against women and girls called Bas Ab Bahut Ho Gaya. Many a-list singers lent their voice to spread awareness about the cause. Some of the singers associated with the concert were Salim Sulaiman, Farhan Akhtar, Armaan Malik, Harshdeep Kaur, Papon, and Sukriti Prakriti. Farhan Akhtar had reportedly stated that he wants to take the campaign to schools and colleges so that the youngsters of the nation take home the message of respecting the women.
