Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, which released in theatres on July 21, has received both critical acclaim and commercial success at the box office. In a recent interview, the filmmaker, who reportedly isn’t a big fan of improvisation and likes to stick to the script, revealed the one interesting line from the movie which was a last-minute addition.

4 things you need to know

  • Oppenheimer features Cillian Murphy in the lead.
  • Robert Downey Jr and Emily Blunt are featured in key roles in the movie.
  • The film is a biopic based on the life of American physicist J Robert Oppenheimer.
  • Oppenheimer has collected $412.44 million at the worldwide box office.

Which Oppenheimer line was improvised?

Nolan, in an interview with The New York Times, revealed the improvised line is part of the scene where Henry Stimson, the U.S. Secretary of War, and other government representatives are meeting with Oppenheimer to decide the Japan cities on which to launch the atomic bomb. The filmmaker disclosed that the line in which Stimson tells everyone not to bomb Kyoto because he spent his honeymoon there, was a last-minute addition.

The filmmaker said actor James Remar, who essayed the role of  Henry Stimson, made the last-minute addition after conducting his own study into the specifics of Stimson's life. Nolan said, "There's a moment where James Remar… He kept talking to me about how he learned that Stimson and his wife had honeymooned in Kyoto. That was one of the reasons that Stimson took Kyoto off the list to be bombed." Nolan added, "I had him crossing the city off the list because of its cultural significance, but I'm like, 'Just add that.' It's a fantastically exciting moment where no one in the room knows how to react."
