Oppenheimer star Cillian Murphy recently shared insights into his experience filming the project with filmmaker Christopher Nolan. During an interview with IndieWire, the Peaky Blinders actor opened up about his favourite scene from the film. Not just that, but he also reflected on the challenges he faced during its shooting.
What is Cillian Murphy's favourite scene from Oppenheimer?
Portraying physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer, Murphy takes on the pivotal role in Nolan's period film, marking a significant milestone in his career after the success of Peaky Blinders. The narrative delves into Oppenheimer's life as the father of the atomic bomb, navigating scientific discoveries amid the backdrop of World War era complexities.
In a candid conversation with IndieWire, Murphy disclosed that his preferred scene in Oppenheimer transpires within a small interrogation room. Despite its seemingly unassuming setting, this space became a focal point of appreciation for the actor due to its challenges and the camaraderie built during filming.
What were the challenges in the interrogation scene?
Describing the difficulties encountered while shooting this particular courtroom scene in a confined space, Murphy highlighted the logistical hurdles of maneuvering within the limited area with large IMAX cameras. Despite the cramped conditions, the actor reminisced fondly about the bond forged among the crew amid the adversity.
"We’d been through it all together. It was this insanely ambitious schedule — we shot it in 57 days, and we’re flying all over the country. In the end, we ended up in this tiny, awful, shitty little bureaucratic space, with the crew shoved at the end of the room with a huge IMAX camera and everyone squished in. It did get pretty fruity in there a couple of times," Murphy said.
Expressing a sense of nostalgia, Murphy likened the experience to his theater days, where collaborative efforts within a confined space were reminiscent of the ensemble spirit. He attributed the scene's significance not only to its execution but also to the memories created during its filming.
Will Oppenheimer win an Oscar?
Based on a biographical book, Oppenheimer intricately navigates the challenges faced by the scientist during his career and eventual downfall, positioning itself as a formidable contender across multiple Oscar categories. The film is anticipated to not only make its mark in various segments but also potentially earn Murphy recognition in the Best Actor category.
