Puerto Rican rapper Daddy Yankee, best known for his global hits like Despacito, Gasolina, and Limbo, has declared his retirement from the music industry. The revelation unfolded during the finale of his La Meta (The Goal) tour in Puerto Rico on Sunday (December 3).

What did Daddy Yankee say about his retirement?

Addressing the audience in Spanish, Daddy Yankee expressed the significance of the moment, stating, "Living a life of success is not the same as living a life with purpose." Despite global acclaim and adoration from fans, he said that he feels a "sense of emptiness" that had lingered for a considerable time.

He said, "My people, this day for me is the most important day of my life. I have to confess that those days are over. Someone was able to fill that emptiness. What good will it be for a man to gain the whole world, yet forfeit his soul? That is why tonight, I recognize, and I am not ashamed to tell the whole world that Jesus lives in me and that I will live for him."

He further shared that he found fulfillment in a spiritual journey. Quoting a Bible verse, he spoke about the value of gaining the world while forfeiting one's soul.

Daddy Yankee says he wants a 'new beginning' as Ramon Ayala

Declaring a 'new beginning,' Daddy Yankee announced his intention to live under his birth name, Ramon Ayala. He expressed a "profound commitment" to redirecting his talents and influence towards his newfound faith, emphasising that all he possesses, including music and social platforms, is now dedicated to serving a higher purpose.

He said, "All the tools that I have in my possession such as music, social networks, platforms, a microphone - everything that Jesus gave me, is now for his kingdom. Thank you very much, Puerto Rico, and I hope that you walk with me in this new beginning. To all the people who followed me, follow Jesus Christ, who is the way, the truth and the life."

As his final show concluded, the spectacle extended beyond the arena. Dozens of drones outside orchestrated a symbolic display, forming the shape of a cross and spelling out the words 'Cristo viene' ('Christ will come'). News of the rapper's retirement took many fans by surprise, with social media buzzing about the unexpected turn of events.
