'Avatar' did not need anybody
The 'Jason Bourne' star told the magazine that Cameron told Damon he doesn't need anybody. The filmmaker believed that the story of the movie 'Avatar' did not require a known face, and if Damon does not take the offer, he will find an unknown actor and give it to him. According to Cameron, the movie does not need Damon, however, if he wishes to do it, Damon can have the ten percent. The co-lead of the upcoming movie, Ford v Ferrari, recalled telling the incident to John Krasinski while writing Promised Land who stood up and started pacing towards the kitchen. Krasinski replied by saying that if Damon had taken that role in Avatar, nothing would've changed except that the conversation that they were having would have happened in space. The American actor acknowledged that he has “left more money on the table than any other actor”.
Damon doesn't regret losing money
Matt Damon further admits that he does not regret losing the huge amount of money however, he still repents letting go of the chance to work with a filmmaker like Cameron. Damon believes that the “bigger regret” to this day is that when he turned down the role, Cameron said he had only made six movies. Damon finds the director's work infrequent but everyone knows all his movies. Therefore it feels like he has done way more movies than anybody else. The 48-year-old actor said that by rejecting the role he let go of the chance to ever work with him. Damon said that it is still “brutal” but his children are “eating” and he is “okay”.
