Love Liza (2002) Dir. Todd Luiso. I imagine, when you lose someone close, you don’t know how to live anymore. Being with them was the only way you knew how to be and when they take their course, your own self entrusts you with the duty to make yours. Wilson’s wife left him a suicide note under the pillow, but he left his bed. He sunk down to the floor and found his cozy spot in an under-lit corner of his silent house. His mother-in-law, who also lost a daughter here, reached out to him. She lived alone. She could fathom but he pushed her away. He stumbles across a whiff floating around a cab's gas tank and takes special interest in this odour. Before he knew, he found himself huffing down a gasoline trail that tip-toed in and around his grief. Before he could let grief wash over him, he lets the fumes soak in his spare piece of red fabric, always ready for use. Wilson’s put up an act he can’t keep up with it. He even quits his job and drives cross country, participating in niche toy automobile competitions, and no matter how hard you wish to think that it’s going somewhere, it isn’t. These aren't passions of awakening, but detours. As saddening as all this sounds, ‘Love Liza’ is essentially a Dramedy, which implies an easy-going sense of humour than buoys our sinking Wilson through a bunch of calmly hilarious bumps along the road. Denny, his employer’s brother-in-law, is a naïve yet generous character who becomes his ally. Jim O’ Rourke’s acoustic compositions also provide flamboyance to the narrative’s searing depression and the visual compositions hide a sedative quality in all of their simplicity. Nevertheless, reality strikes as mishaps wind him up again. While we forget where this freewheeling trajectory is headed, the film remembers that the respite to this tiresome eternity, Wilson’s closure, lies at the flap of the envelope. Philip Seymour Hoffman, who stars as Wilson, expresses Wilson’s inner instability with great transparency and subtlety. Kathy Bates, his mother-in-law, challenges his alienation with heartfelt determination. It's their ill-tempered friction that erupts catharsis. #philipseymourhoffman #loveliza #grief #indiefilm #loss
