Oscar-winner Jodie Foster says Marvel superhero movies 'is a phase': It's lasted a little too long
Academy Award-winning actor Jodie Foster labelled them as "a phase" that has lingered longer than she anticipated.
In a recent interview, Academy Award-winning actor Jodie Foster shared her perspective on the enduring popularity of superhero movies. She labelled them as "a phase" that has lingered longer than she anticipated. Despite acknowledging her admiration for certain superhero films such as Iron Man, Black Panther, and The Matrix, the actress expressed that these movies, though entertaining, lack the profound impact that other genres hold for her.
A plethora of phases: Jodie Foster's cinematic journey
Reflecting on her extensive career, Jodie Foster told Elle magazine, "It’s a phase. It’s a phase that’s lasted a little too long for me, but it’s a phase, and I’ve seen so many different phases."
She added, "“Hopefully people will be sick of it soon. The good ones — like ‘Iron Man,’ ‘Black Panther,’ ‘The Matrix’ — I marvel at those movies, and I’m swept up in the entertainment of it, but that’s not why I became an actor. And those movies don’t change my life. Hopefully there’ll be room for everything else.” Contrary to her sentiments on superhero movies, the actress shared profound praise for the A24 family saga, Everything Everywhere All at Once. The film not only achieved commercial success, grossing over $100 million worldwide, but also secured seven Academy Awards, including the prestigious Best Picture trophy. The actress credited directors The Daniels for crafting what she considers her favourite movie of all time.
Jodie Foster on emotional impact of Everything Everywhere All at Once
Jodie Foster delved into the emotional resonance of the film, revealing personal experiences that transcend the screen. Recalling a poignant viewing with one of her sons, she described an intense connection, saying, "we held hands and pinched each other and cried for 45 minutes afterward."
While Foster appreciates the spectacle and entertainment value of superhero movies, she hopes for a cinematic landscape that embraces a broader range of genres. In her words, "Hopefully there’ll be room for everything else," indicating a desire for diversity and a shift away from the dominance of a single genre.
Interestingly, despite Foster's stance on superhero films, her co-star in Nyad, Annette Bening, had a significant role in Marvel's Captain Marvel in 2019.
