Kadri Gopalnath passes away: Tributes pour in for the saxophonist

Kadri Gopalnath was the first musician to introduce saxophone in Carnatic music. The legend died at the age of 69. due to cardiac arrest on October 11.

Kadri Gopalnath, a renowned saxophonist, passed away today at the age of 69. Kadri Gopalnath was a pioneering musician who was awarded Padma Shri for his notable work in the music industry. Gopalnath is survived by wife Sarojini and two sons, Manikanth Kadri who is a notable music director and Guruprasad Kadri, who is working in Kuwait. Tributes on social media poured in for the celebrated musician after his demise.

According to media reports, his family informed that the musician had been admitted to A.J.Hospital and Research Center in Mangaluru (Mangalore) on October 10. They informed he was suffering from back pain. He took his last breath at 4:45 am on October 11 due to cardiac arrest. Kadri Gopalnath's last rites are yet to be performed as his family is waiting for his son who works in Dubai to return.

Gopalnath’s mortal remains will be kept at the Town Hall in Mangaluru, to allow people to pay last respects to the noted musician. As news of his death spread, a large number of fans arrived at his house in Padavinangady to pay their tributes. Kadri Gopalnath was the first person to introduce Carnatic music on saxophone in India. He was the first Carnatic musician who was invited to play at the BBC Promenade concert in London's Royal Albert Hall in 1994.

With the passing away of the celebrated saxophonist, netizens took to social media to pay tributes to Kadri Gopalnath and remember his stellar contribution to the field of music. 

Among the people who remembered Gopalnath were Sumanth Raman, Karnataka's tourism minister C.T.Ravi and classical singer Sanjay Subrahmanyan.

The chief minister of Karnataka also expressed his condolence on the musician's death.

Kadri Gopalnath had received several awards during his lifetime, including the Kendra Sangeet Natak Academy Award. Interestingly, Mangalore and Bangalore universities had conferred him their honorary doctorates.
