Maharaj Controversy Ends, Aamir Khan's Son Junaid Khan's Debut Film Is Now Streaming
A section of Lord Krishna devotees from Pushtimarg sect alleged that the content in Maharaj will hurt religious sentiments, prompting court's intervention.
The Gujarat High Court on Friday lifted the stay on the release of Aamir Khan's son Junaid Khan, Sharvari Wagh and Jaideep Ahlawat starrer OTT film Maharaj. It can now be watched on Netflix. The movie was set to stream on June 14 but its release was put on hold after a section of social media users expressed concern over the film "dividing communities". Later, a section of Lord Krishna devotees from Pushtimarg sect alleged that the content in Maharaj will hurt religious sentiments, prompting court's intervention.
The HC watched the film and cleared it for release. On June 20, Justice Sangeeta Vishen had decided to watch the film before further hearing the matter challenging its OTT release. In her order on Friday, the judge noted that the movie has been certified by CBFC and it does not target the sect.
The controversy surrounding Maharaj explained
Yash Raj Films , the producer of the movie, offered to provide the link and password to the court to watch the movie in order to decide whether it hurts the religious sentiments of a particular community as argued by the petitioners.
Members of the Pushtimarg sect have filed a petition against the release after they came across articles about the film which is based on the libel case of 1862 heard and decided by the British judges. The petitioners have pointed out that the British-era court, which had decided the libel case, "Castigates the Hindu religion and makes seriously blasphemous comments against Lord Krishna as well as the devotional songs and hymns."
