Shraddha Kapoor and Rajkummar Rao starrer Stree 2 is set to release in theatres on this Independence Day. It is a horror-comedy sequel to the 2018 blockbuster Stree and the fifth installment in the Maddock Supernatural Universe.
The film is based on local folklore about the Sarkata Bhoot, promising a thrilling experience. This follows the footsteps of its predecessor of the same franchise. Although Tees Maar Khan starring Akshay Kumar also featured the Sarkata Bhoot in a haunted jungle, Stree 2 has explored the same horror lore with more twists.
Who is Sarkata Bhoot In Stree 2?
Dinesh Vijan’s upcoming film Stree 2 introduces Sarkata as the villain, who will face off against Shraddha Kapoor’s character, Stree. The trailer shows the Sarkata hypnotising the men of Chanderi and turning them against their protector, Stree. This character is the adaptation of real-life lore as it is widely believed that those who die in accidents become this evil entity.
Though, a well-known legend from Uttarakhand claims a different story. According to the local lore, the Sarkata Bhoot is not just any vengeful ghost but the spirit of a British officer who died during World War II. This twist adds a historical dimension to the myth with the rich drape of supernatural beliefs. Uttarakhand is famous for its forests and supernatural ghost stories, with characters like Chhalaawa and Sarkata Bhoot being two of the most popular.
Chhalaawa is a supernatural being capable of transforming into any person, animal, or object.
Bhediya, Munjya based on local lore
This is not the only evil lore that has been adapted in horror movies from the Maddock Films universe. Another movie by the same production, titled Bhediya, is inspired by Arunachal Pradesh's legend of a shape-shifting werewolf (Yapum), who wants to protect the jungle, even if he or she has to kill somebody.
On the other side, latest blockbuster Munjya was based on a monstrous entity from the Konkani folklore.
