'Boycott Sai Pallavi' hashtag was viral on social media before the Tamil film Amaran hit the big screens. An old video of Sai started doing the rounds on social media in which the actress said that the Indian army is viewed as a “terrorist group” in Pakistan . “People in Pakistan think our army is a terrorist group. But for us, it is them. So, the perspective changes. I don't understand violence,” she said in a resurfaced interview, which was originally from 2022. As the video reemerged, netizens reacted with anger towards her remarks and condemned the actress for her comments.
However, as Amaran received love from the audiences and scored good box office figures in its first two days, the trend died down.
What is Amaran about?
In Amaran, which has been dubbed by many as the "best film on army sacrifice", Sivakarthikeyan essays the role of Major Mukund Varadarajan. He was posthumously awarded the Ashok Chakra for his actions during a counterterrorism operation while on deputation to the 44th Rashtriya Rifles battalion in Jammu and Kashmir.
In the film, Sai essays the role of Indhu Rebecca Varghese. Her emotional scenes with Sivakarthikeyan and the chemistry between Major Mukund and Indhu, which the two actors bring alive on the screens, have become the highlights of the movie. Before the release of Amaran, Sai was been accused of "disrespecting" the Indian army, but the film has turned it around for her. Sai brings authenticity to the role of Indhu and the sacrifices she made for the nation. How she strikes the right emotional chord in the film's crucial scenes, has also been lauded.
How is Amaran performing at the box office?
Amaran became the biggest day 1 grosser of Sivakarthikeyan's career with ₹21.40 crore collection in India. On day 2, it minted ₹19.15 crore, taking its total to ₹40.55 crore at the domestic box office. The majority of its collections have come from Tamil Nadu. It is expected to perform very well in its extended opening weekend.
