Nayanthara's Annapoorani Back On OTT After Removal Due To Love Jihad Scene, India Release Uncertain
Annapoorani which is headlined by Nayanthara is all set return to OTT platform after several controversies over hurting religious sentiments.
Tamil film Annapoorani which stars Nayanthara in lead roles will be returning back to an OTT platform. The film was released on the big screens on December 1, 2023 and later debuted on Netflix on December 29 but was taken down over objection to certain scenes.
Which OTT platform Annapoorani will stream on?
Annapoorani will be back on OTT space soon and will exclusively stream on Simply South from August 9, this year. However, the film will be available worldwide, except in India. The streaming service took to X to confirm the release. But there is no information yet about the availability od the film in India on any other platform.
What is the controversy about Annapoorani?
On January 11, days after Annapoorani made its Netflix debut, an FIR was filed against the film and key stakeholders by Ramesh Solanki, the founder of the Hindu IT cell. Solanki has claimed that the movie has offended Hindu religious sentiments, which prompted legal action against actors Nayanthara and Jai, writer-director Nilesh Krishna, producers Jatin Sethi, R Ravindran, and Punit Goenka, Zee Studios Chief Business Officer Shariq Patel, and Netflix India's head, Monika Shergill.
The complaints also alleged that the film has made controversial remarks about Lord Ram and also promotes love jihad.
Which scenes of Annapoorani angered netizens?
According to a report in PTI, the complaint mentioned that the last scene of the film which shows a temple priest’s daughter, played by Nayanthara, offers namaz wearing hijab before making biryani. In another scene of the film, Farhaan, the friend of the character played by Nayanthara, brainwashes her into cutting the meat and says Bhagwan Shri Ram and Maa Sita had also consumed meat. It mentions one more scene in which Nayanthara doesn't go to the temple, but goes to Farhaan's place for 'iftaari'.

Directed by Nilesh Krishnaa, the film also features Kartik Kumar, Poornima Ravi, Jai, Losliya Mariyanesan, Sathyaraj and Redin Kingsley among others.
Annapoorani follows the story of a daughter of a temple cook who goes against her family’s wishes to make non-vegetarian food to prove that she’s a talented chef.
